About this rug

This rug takes the Oushak layout, a star-centered medallion with open palmettes, paired leaves and thin vines, and sets it in sand, warm ivory and soft sage on a muted slate blue field. A sand border with an ivory vine frames it, and the design mirrors both ways, so it has no top. The field is a gentle slate blue-gray: two of seven buyers say it is not a true navy, and it looks close to navy only in dim light. It is hand-tufted in India with a 100% wool face on a canvas back. The dense cut pile is 0.39 in high on a rug 0.87 in thick, matte and soft underfoot, with no fringe. New wool sheds at first, and it is not solution-dyed, so keep it out of strong sun. It suits living rooms, bedrooms, studies and dining rooms. The size sold as 8x10 measures 7'6" × 9'6", and the largest round and square are 9'9" across. At 0.87 in it is thick, so check the gap under any door it must pass; most doors clear about 0.4 in. The large sizes are heavy enough to need two people. Spot clean only, with mild detergent; it is not washable. It has no grip back, so lay it on a cushioned felt pad cut 2 in smaller than the rug each way.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
