About this rug

This rug is hand-tufted in India from 100% wool. A cream ground is crossed by a windowpane of doubled taupe lines, and at each crossing sits a small cluster of four blue-gray squares. The lines have a soft, streaky strié, so the check reads gentle rather than sharp. The pile is 0.4 in on a canvas back, 0.7 in thick overall, with a nubby face that feels soft underfoot. There is no fringe. The check suits a modern farmhouse living room, a calm bedroom or a dining room with light wood and linen. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 10' × 14', plus an 18" sample. The 5' × 7'6" is 6 in shorter than a standard 5' × 8'. Custom sizes, rounds included, can be made from 1 to 12 ft wide and up to 18 ft long, with a lead time of about seven months, or about five months expedited. Spot clean with water only. The wool sheds at first, and a felt-and-rubber pad keeps the rug in place. The colors are not fade resistant, so keep it out of strong sun.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
