About this rug

This rug draws a windowpane grid on a heathered gray field with an olive cast. Narrow green bands shade from deep forest to soft sage along their length. Each band is edged with two thin cream pinstripes, and four small slate squares sit at every crossing. The grid runs off every edge, with no border and no fringe. It reads as a quiet modern check rather than an Art Deco design. It is hand tufted in India with a 100% wool face on a canvas backing. The medium pile is 0.4 inch and the rug is 0.7 inch thick overall. The surface is tight, matte and nubby, soft underfoot rather than plush. In the room photos the green bands read paler; the overhead photo is the truest guide to color. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 10' × 14', plus an 18" sample, custom sizes and rounds. The 5' × 7'6" is listed with 5' × 8' rugs and is 6 inches shorter. An 8' × 10' suits an 84-inch sofa with chairs, front legs on, or a queen bed set crosswise. Spot clean only, with water only; it is not washable. New hand-tufted wool sheds for the first weeks. The canvas back has no grip, so lay it on a felt-and-rubber pad. Check door gaps too: rug and pad stand about 0.9 inch tall. Keep it out of strong direct sun.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
