About this rug

A hand-tufted wool rug with a calm windowpane grid. Pale gray panes with a soft blue-sage cast sit inside sand bands, each band carrying a thin ivory pinstripe, and a small charcoal cross knot marks every crossing. There is no border and no fringe; the grid runs to the edges. It is made in India with a 100% wool face on a canvas backing. The panes and bands are tight wool loops, soft underfoot but firm rather than plush, with a 0.4-inch medium pile and a total thickness of 0.7 inch. It sheds at first, as new wool does. In warm light the panes read deeper and warmer than in the product photo, so the 18-inch sample is a good way to check the color at home. Choose the 8' × 10' for an 84-inch sofa with chairs, front legs on, or a queen bed set crosswise; the 9' × 12' and 10' × 14' suit a king bed or an eight-seat table. The 5' × 7'6" size, filed as 5x8, is 6 inches shorter than a true 5' × 8'. Custom sizes up to 12' × 18' and rounds can be ordered. The larger sizes arrive rolled and heavy, so plan on two people. Spot clean only, with water only; it is not washable. Blot spills at once, vacuum without a beater bar and use a rug pad so it stays put. Keep it out of strong sun and rotate it every six to twelve months.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
