About this rug

A windowpane check in hand-tufted wool. Heathered squares run from soft sage to deep forest green, framed by warm cream bands that each carry two fine gray-green pinstripes. A small knot of four charcoal squares sits at every crossing. There is no border and no fringe: the grid runs off all four edges, like a length of tailored fabric. The face is 100% wool, hand tufted on a canvas backing in India. Its looped, pebbly surface is matte and soft underfoot, with a 0.4 inch medium pile and a total thickness of 0.7 inch. The squares stay roughly a foot across in every size, so an 8' × 10' or larger reads as a calm grid, while a 2' × 3' shows only a couple of cut squares. Use it as the anchor in a living room, bedroom or study. An 8' × 10' takes a 7' sofa with chairs, front legs on, or sits crosswise under a queen bed. It has no grip back, so lay it on a felt-and-rubber pad, and check the gap under doors. The 9' × 12' and 10' × 14' weigh about 78 and 101 lb: plan on two people. Spot clean only, with water only; it is not washable. Like most new wool rugs, it sheds at first. It is not fade resistant, so keep it out of strong sun. Custom sizes and rounds can be ordered, with a lead time of about seven months.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
