About this rug

This hand-tufted rug has a 100% wool face and a quiet tile grid. Narrow upright bars of cut pile sit between thin off-white lines of small loops set a little lower, so the pattern comes from texture more than contrast. Named sage, the bars read as pale gray with a faint cool green cast and fine slate-blue streaks, a touch greener on warm wood floors. The horizontal lines wander and step, so the grid looks drawn by hand. There is no border and no fringe, and the corners are softly rounded. The medium wool pile is 0.31 inch deep and soft underfoot; the rug is 0.51 inch thick overall. It is made in India and sold in nine sizes, from an 18" sample to a 12' × 15', including a 3' × 10' runner; custom sizes and rounds can be ordered. The 5' × 7'6" size is 6 inches shorter than a true 5' × 8'. Every size ships rolled, and the 8' × 10' ships at 84 lb. It suits a calm living room or bedroom with light wood, cool white walls and plain upholstery. It is not washable and needs professional rug cleaning, so it is not a rug for pets, frequent spills or busy halls. New wool sheds for the first weeks. At 0.51 inch it may not clear a door, so measure the gap. There is no grip back: use a cushioned felt pad 2 inches smaller each way.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
