About this rug

This hand-tufted rug has a 100% wool face in a light oatmeal heather. A fine off-white grid of small squares, each a little over an inch across, crosses it. The grid runs to every edge, with no border and no fringe, and the lines wobble slightly, the mark of hand work. From across a room it reads as a calm, textured neutral rather than a pattern. The pile is low, tight loops, 0.3 inch high and 0.5 inch in total. The grid is tufted in a thicker yarn that sits a little higher. It is soft underfoot in a firm, nubby way rather than plush, and matte, with no sheen. It suits dry living rooms and bedrooms. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 12' × 15', plus a 3' × 10' runner and custom sizes, rounds included. The size in the 5' × 8' group measures 5' × 7'6". It has no grip back, so use a cushioned felt pad. At 0.5 inch before the pad it may catch a low door, so measure the gap. The room photos read darker and warmer than the rug; the product photo shows its true color. Care is spot clean only, with no moisture, so it is not washable. It sheds at first, as new wool does. The loops can catch the claws of pets that dig. It is not fade resistant, so keep it out of strong sun. Larger sizes arrive rolled and heavy, so plan on two people.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
