About this rug

This hand-tufted rug has a 100% wool face and a fine windowpane grid: thin white lines over heathered pale gray squares, running edge to edge with no border and no fringe. The lines are drawn by hand, so they drift, thicken and sometimes break, and the rows shift a little in tone from the yarn. That is part of the handmade look, not a flaw. On a white background it reads as a cool, pale gray. Beside warm wood floors and under warm light it leans toward greige, as the photos on wood show; expect that warmer tone at home. The pile is low, 0.3 inch, about half an inch thick overall, and shows as small pebbly wool loops: firm and springy rather than plush. It is made in India. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 12' × 15', with a 3' × 10' runner, an 18" sample, custom sizes and rounds. The 5x8 size is 5' × 7'6". It suits dry, calm rooms: a living room, a bedroom or a study. Care is spot clean only, with no moisture, so blot spills dry and keep it away from kitchens, baths and entries. New wool sheds for the first weeks or months. There is no grip backing, so use a cushioned pad on hard floors, then check the gap under your doors. It is not solution-dyed: keep it out of strong sun and rotate it. Large sizes are heavy; an 8' × 10' ships at about 66 lb.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
