About this rug

A fine windowpane grid runs edge to edge across this rug: small square cells of pale powder blue, softly flecked with blue-gray, divided by thin off-white lines. There is no border and no fringe, so from across a room it reads as a calm, near-solid blue-gray with a quiet check texture. In warm light and on warm wood floors it leans more light gray than blue. It is hand tufted in India with a 100% wool face and a low 0.3-inch pile, 1/2 inch thick overall. The off-white lines are looped-looking tufts that stand just above the cells, so the grid is built into the surface: soft underfoot, but nubby rather than plush. Lines jog and cells vary slightly, as hand tufting does. It suits a living room or bedroom, from a 5' × 7'6" for a loveseat to a 12' × 15' for a large seating group, with a 3' × 10' runner for an indoor hall and custom sizes to order. The size listed as 5x8 is 5' × 7'6". Spot clean only, with no moisture: blot spills at once and never soak it. New wool sheds at first. Keep it out of strong, direct sun. Use a pad on hard floors, since it has no grip back, and measure the gap under any door it must clear. It arrives rolled; 8' × 10' and larger weigh over 60 lb, so plan on two people.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
