About this rug

This rug keeps a stripe quiet. Three columns run its length, each stacked with wide pale greige bars and narrower warm off-white ones. The center column sits half a step out of line with the sides, so the bars read like staggered piano keys. The greige looks soft and grayer than tan. The contrast is low, and there is no border or fringe. It is hand tufted in India with a 100% wool face on a canvas back. The greige bars are cut pile and stand a little above the tighter off-white loops, which gives the stripe a real, matte surface. The pile is medium, 0.31 inch on a rug 0.51 inch thick, and it is soft underfoot. The 8' × 10' suits an 84-inch sofa with chairs or a queen bed set crosswise. The 9' × 12' suits a king bed or an eight-seat table, and the 2'6" × 8' runner suits a hall. The 5' × 8' size measures 5' × 7'6". It is rated for high traffic, but at 0.51 inch it may not clear a low door, so measure the gap first. It is not washable: professional rug cleaning only. New wool sheds at first. The back has no grip, so lay it on a pad. The off-white loops can catch pet claws, and the two largest sizes are heavy enough to need two people.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
