About this rug

One quiet idea shapes this rug: a warm ivory field inside a single sandy tan frame. Soft slubs of tan and light brown run across the field, so it does not look flat or stark. From across the room the frame reads like jute binding; up close it is the same soft wool pile as the field, tufted in rows that curve around the rounded corners. It is hand tufted in India with a 100% wool face on a canvas backing. The medium pile is 0.4" and the rug is 0.6" thick, with a dense, pebbly, matte surface that is soft underfoot, springy rather than plush. New wool sheds loose fibers at first, for weeks or months, and a tufted rug may have a mild smell that airs out. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 9' × 12'; the 5' × 7'6" is 6" shorter than a 5' × 8'. It suits living rooms and bedrooms: the 8' × 10' holds an 84" sofa with chairs, front legs on, or a queen bed crosswise. It is rated for high traffic, but the pale field shows soil, spills and dark pet hair. Care is professional rug cleaning only; it is not washable. The canvas back has no grip, so use a rug pad on hard floors. At 0.6" it may catch a door, so measure the gap first, and keep it out of strong sun: it is not fade resistant.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
