About this rug

This rug takes its layout from old Anatolian and Caucasian village rugs. One large stepped medallion sits at the center, dark espresso around a plum cross, with small tulip-like buds and a diamond heart. Four branching sprigs fill the corners of a faded red field, and a sand border carries a plum leaf vine all the way around. It is hand tufted in India from 100% wool, with a medium pile just under half an inch high and a canvas back. The field has a streaked, uneven tone that gives it a lived-in depth. It is soft underfoot, and like most tufted wool it sheds at first. The medallion is large, so the rug reads best centered under a coffee table, a dining table or across the foot of a bed. At 0.7 in thick it needs a felt-and-rubber pad to stay put, and it may catch a low door. Sizes run from 2' × 3' to 10' × 14'. The 5' × 7'6" is 6 in shorter than a 5' × 8'. Custom sizes, rounds included, go up to 12' × 18'. Spot clean only, with water only. Keep it out of strong, direct sun.

How this rug is made, and what it is made of

Construction

Hand tufted

Yarn is punched through a canvas with a hand-held tufting tool, then sheared to an even, plush pile and backed for strength. It has the look and feel of a knotted rug, made in weeks rather than months, at a gentler price.

Material

Wool

Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
