About this rug
This rug is hand woven in India from 100% wool, with no pile. A thin off-white windowpane plaid crosses a soft light gray, the lines mostly in pairs. The weave is chunky, rows of rounded nubs, so from across a room the plaid reads almost as texture. There is no border and no fringe; the grid runs to every edge. This is the gray colorway of a design that also comes in ivory and in warm beige. Underfoot it is firm and nubby rather than soft, and about half an inch thick. New wool sheds a little at first. It is pet friendly, with no loops to catch claws, though a digging claw could pull one of the short white dashes. The size listed as 5' × 8' measures 5' × 7'6". An 8' × 10' suits an 84-inch sofa with the front legs on, a queen bed set crosswise or a six-seat table. Custom sizes up to 10' × 14' can be ordered; they take six months or more. Spot clean only, with water only; it is not washable. It has no backing, so lay it on a thin grip pad on hard floors, and measure the gap under any door that swings over it. The two largest sizes may arrive folded: reverse-roll the rug and weight the corners, and the creases ease over a few days. The wool is not fade resistant, so keep it out of strong sun.

Construction
Hand woven
Woven by hand on a loom, warp and weft interlaced row by row. Most hand-woven rugs are flatweaves with no pile to crush or shed, so they stay low, light and easy to move: right for busy rooms, hallways and dining tables.

Wool
Naturally springy, so the pile stands back up after furniture and footsteps. Its lanolin helps it shed spills and dirt, it holds deep color for decades, and New Zealand wool, used in many of our rugs, is among the softest grades.
